Web Graphics and Its Role in Websites

It’s true that the web world is now the main source of information, but it is not limited to that only. The web is also a source of representing ideas in an artistic way. Data visualization, graphics and more have made everything so interesting that people can stick to it for different purposes, not only for gathering information.

Whenever someone visits any particular site the graphics of that page is most important because if it is not good enough, they will lose their interest. It is the graphics of any particular website that enhances the experience of any user. Now, let’s find out what is graphics?

What are Graphics?

When you see any website what attracts your attention first? The text or the images? Obviously the latter attracts first, this is the graphics. In simple words it can be described as the visual representations that are used in a website for representing any information, emotion, idea or feeling. Through graphics the website owner may educate, entertain or have emotional impact on the user. It is also very important tool of branding.

Different examples of graphics used in any website are photographs, maps, family trees, designs, patterns, cartoons, schematics, vector images, architectural or engineering blueprint, and pie charts and so on.

For representing the ideas the graphic designers uses different tools and techniques. Along with these tools and techniques they use their idea to create something visually appealing for the users.

What is Graphics Used For?

From the above discussion it must be clear that the main purpose for suing graphics is to enhance the appearance of the web page and thus attract attention of the users.

For different types of websites there are different ways of using graphics. Like for a medical Centre website the concentration is more on detailed information and the text is most important there. The graphics used there is mainly for supporting the text. On the other hand for a flower shop website the pictures are most important and a graphic designer understands these facts and design accordingly.

There are different formats available in which a graphics designer saves the work done by them, like, PNG for photographs, and SVG or API for data visualization, interactive line art and so on.

  • PNG or Portable Network Graphics is a file format that is static. It is useful for well compressed storage and for exchanging raster images. This format is mainly designed for the web and it has rendering capabilities. Most web browsers, image toolkits, and graphical authoring tools support this format and hence it is used extensively by the graphic designers. The extension of such files are “.png”
  • Another common format for graphic designing is SVG or Scalable Vector Graphics. It is considered as the markup language for describing any aspect of the Web application image. It is totally interactive and supports wide range of visual features like gradient, clipping, opacity, masking and filters. Most of the modern browsers supports SVG format and even are used for mobile devices too. In short it is now the HTML of graphics.
